While the young deaf girl is standing on the corner, no more than ten years old the first time she sees the old man playing his violin, idolizes the violinist because he can bring happiness to both himself and others by just playing his instrument. Although she cant hear what he is playing she can tell it's beautiful because of the reaction he gets from the crowd of onlookers. This inspires the young deaf girl to begin to learn how to play the violin for herself.
She meets resistance from the pianist in their school when the deaf girl is practicing and is heartbroken until she sees the old man and realizes that he can sign. The young girl asks the old man why she has to be different. The old man replies to her by asking her why she needs to be like everybody else. This inspires the young girl not to quit and to be comfortable with herself.
